Extant S02 (TV Series 2014-2015): Molly Woods, an astronaut with ISEA (International Space Exploration Agency) is assigned a 13-month solo mission aboard space station Seraphim. It will come as a surprise to Hollywood, apparently, but the age of the lone adventurer making earth shattering breakthroughs ended centuries ago. Not years, not decades, centuries ago. Inventions like a robotic child, excursions into deep space, business investments on a grand scale, and so on are not solo endeavors. Large numbers of people are involved every step of the way. Anyone who has worked in an organization learns this the first day on the job.
Here Hollywood presents a lifelike AI robotic android invented by one guy, a deep space year long mission with a crew of one, a space hero whose return medical is conducted by one doctor, a space agency consisting of one operative, and corporate funding for a massive android project approved by a CEO with no oversight. It’s all silly. Add to that characters who are made to act less intelligent than your average grapefruit and you have a terrible viewing experience.
Halle Berry is a joy to watch even if woefully miscast as a physically fit astronaut. Her husband is well portrayed as untrustworthy and megalomaniacal. The child actor is very robotic. The other roles are equally convincing. Too bad no character is someone you care about. Five stars for the acting which means no stars for the plot, dialogue, continuity, sound (someone needs to learn background means in the background), and the rest.
